I came across this opening section to a devotional that members of our church are starting today. We are just opening up the first chapter, maybe a second one this evening. But it is this part of the reading that got my attention.
It was in a story about this young woman who was treated very poorly by her parents. They told her whole life that she was ugly, unworthy, wouldn’t amount to anything and things of those nature. She found a way to get a job hidden from her parents and saved money to fly from Europe to America to speak with T.L. Osborn. Now that in itself is interesting, but it is the illustration Osborn used to relate this woman to worth.
Osborn found this old penny on the street. It has been out there for a while and you can imagine the shape it was in. And as Osborn picked up the penny the Holy Spirit spoke to him. You see, this penny. No matter how long it had been out there in the elements, run over, weathered, dirty and soiled, it still had the same value as a brand new one just off the press. It is there that Osborn would help this young woman see herself valuable in God’s eyes.
Think about that for a minute. It is true. Take any penny from your night stand, piggy jar, or wherever you keep your change and look at it. The same can be said for any coin of any amount. Compare them side by side. A penny from the 1930s has the same value as one made this year (note that the U.S. government has stopped making the penny because of the cost to make it). So it is with you and me.
God doesn’t compare the way you and I do. We look at people and compare ourselves to them, based on any number of factors. But God sees us differently, because He is the one who made us. And to him we are all valuable in the sight of God.

“Since you are precious and honored in my sight, and because I love you, I will give people in exchange for you, nations in exchange for your life.” Isaiah 43:4 (NIV)
If you are going through a hard time, or someone you know is, remind yourself or them, that they are valuable to God. And thus you are valuable to others. Each one of us is different and has a specific purpose. Just like parts of the body have a specific purpose. All parts of the body are valuable. And so are you. As the title of the book we are reading says - You Are God’s Best!
